The Trinity is photographer Gavin Evans’ homage to Berlin, the safe haven for creative fugitives. Like Bowie, Iggy and Nick Cave, the three protagonists of The Trinity, Evans too came in search of space; space to breathe, space to create, space to be. They all found this and more in Berlin.
In February 2016 The Institute opened its doors to the public with 'Bowie- The Session' by Gavin Evans'. In its 6 week run over 4,500 visitors came to the show and put The Institute firmly on Berlin's cultural map. The 'The Trinity' was intended as the inaugural exhibition but was changed at the last moment due to Bowie's untimely death.
Over the years Evans has taken numerous iconic images of legendary artists. Of all his subjects three in particular resonate with their special relationship with Evans' adopted Berlin. David Bowie came to the city in 1976 and created Heroes, Low and Lodger- his Berlin trilogy. Iggy Pop travelled with Bowie to Berlin where recorded Idiot and Lust for Life. In ’83 Nick Cave found refuge in the city where he formed his band The Bad Seeds with Berliner Blixa Bargeld. In Berlin Cave recorded The First Born is Dead and wrote his novel 'And the Ass Saw the Angel’. Cave, Pop and Bowie are responsible for putting Berlin firmly on the musical and creative map.
Berlin continues to be, as Bowie observed; "The greatest cultural extravaganza that one could imagine.”
The Trinity exemplifies Evans approach to portraiture where celebrity is suppressed and the relationship between photographer and subject surfaces. His images of Nick Cave, separated by 2 decades, show the artist mature into the contemporary creative polymath. His portraits of Iggy Pop transgress the stereotype photographs of the proto-punk agent provocateur revealing the multi-faceted personality. Evans' renowned images of Starman David Bowie reveal a sensitive and approachable legend.
Gavin’s portraits of his three Zeit Guys have featured on covers of magazines, books and Lp’s including; Nick Cave’s Bunny Munro, Iggy Pop’s LP Icon and Evans' book biopic: iggy pop, The V&A’s Bowie Is book and Sotheby's auction of Bowie's art collection.
